I arrived in Hong Kong late on the 22nd March with the somewhat ambitious hope that I'd find somewhere to live, buy a car, sort out an ID card, driving license, bank account etc and move in to a property before the 1st April when I was due to start work so that my wife and 20 month old daughter had a base for when they arrived in Hong Kong on the 9th April. I made contact with Fiona at ExpatSOSHK before leaving the UK and gave her a call the night I arrived to find that she'd already arranged for me to meet with 2 property agents covering Sai Kung/Clearwater bay district the following morning. Fiona ensured that I only saw property I could afford, but also made sure I saw the full range of what was available. With this head-start and Fiona's careful note taking and management of our available time I saw approximately 30 properties in 3 days, made an offer on a property in Clearwater Bay and arranged to move in on the 27th March.
I was thoroughly orientated, had all the common pitfalls explained to me and was personally steered through the ID card application process and opening a bank account. I was taken for some lovely food, shown around the transport system and shopping malls, and even to Ikea (a horrible job at the best of times) and grocery shopping. By the Friday evening I was happily sat in my own flat less than a week after getting off the plane with all the goods I needed to comfortably survive and 4 days free to get my affairs in order and see a bit of Hong Kong before starting work.
I can't recommend this service enough, friendly, knowledgeable and very capable, save yourself weeks of confusion and headaches, it's money well spent.
